Eating a Healthy Breakfast to Prevent and Control Type 2 Diabetes

With Type 2 Diabetes (even without), you should be an eating a healthy breakfast that is low in sugar and fats, but when eating breakfast, finding a healthy breakfast can be difficult, especially with cereals. Today’s cereals, mostly geared to children, are full of sugar, but there are healthy cereals that can help you eat well-balanced breakfast.

 

In our hectic society, some people will skip breakfast. Doing this, however, can have several negative effects. Not only does it slow your metabolism but also hurts your blood sugar levels. A recent study has shown that men who skipped breakfast had a 21% higher risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

 

For both diabetics and those trying to prevent the disease, eating a healthy breakfast that will make you feel full until lunch offers the best benefits. An easy way to do this is to eat a protein or fiber-filled breakfast. Eating a Greek yogurt with granola is a good start, but that often will leave you wanting a snack later. If your snack is fruit, you could be doing well, but often our snacks are a little worse.

 

There are one low-sugar and high-fiber food that will help you make it to lunch without wanting to snack: cereal. When you choose to eat this food, however, you need to be sure to select a whole grain cereal that is low in sugar.

 

To help you manage your Type 2 Diabetes, or to help prevent it, you want to look for a whole-grain cereal such as one with granola or muesli.  You can also search for a whole grain cereal with nuts (Almonds are good.) that will help you feel full longer and provide the nutrition that you need. For cold mornings, oatmeal or porridge will give the needed fiber and nutrition. You can even add fresh fruit to add a sweetener to it.

 

Look for cereals with a combination of the following ingredients:

  • Whole grains

  • Oat Clusters

  • Nuts

  • Barley

  • Granola

  • Dried Fruit

  • Hemp

 

One thing to avoid is the cereal bars, even cereal bars with muesli or granola bars. These bars tend to have hidden sugar and fats such as better. While they are ok on occasion, they should not be a go-to breakfast when you are in a hurry.
