Managing Type 2 Diabetes Through Diet

For most diabetics, medications are the first line of defense to control their Type 2 Diabetes. While medicine can certainly be helpful in controlling your symptoms, it is not always the best method. Drugs can have side effects, and some of the most popular medications are becoming controversial because of them. Unless medication is absolutely necessary, it is better to manage your diabetes through a proper diet.

The goal with medication or diet is to control the level of glucose in the blood. One of the biggest culprits that causes blood sugar to rise is carbohydrates. It’s critically important to understand how the body processes carbs will be vital to managing your Diabetes.

When thinking about the Glycemic index, the idea is to eat more foods low on the index rather than foods that are high on the index. Food that is high in the index includes glucose, high fructose corn syrup, white bread, white rice and white potatoes among others. Samples of foods in the middle of the index are white sugar, whole wheat, basmati rice, grape juice, ice cream or sweet potato. On the lower end of the index are beans, nuts, oats, grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Foods that Help Control Blood Sugar

As a diabetic, you should eat more foods that help to slow the release of sugar into the blood. Some of these foods are cinnamon, beans, and buckwheat. While not a specific food, fiber helps to slow the release of blood sugar. Grains such as oats or barley can help to counteract a carbohydrate that you may have eaten. Fiber supplements also help though be careful with some as they have hidden sugars and are more like candy bars than nutritional food.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods

It is now known that inflammation plays a role in Diabetes. Reducing inflammation should be a goal when managing your Diabetes. Foods that have anti-inflammatory foods include green leafy vegetables, celery, beets, broccoli, blueberries, Salmon, walnuts, and ginger.
